MERCY MATERNITY CENTER
|
This incredible ministry just delivered their 20,000 baby! What a landmark celebration! They average about 1,500 deliveries per year, so they have an incredible opportunity to share the love of Jesus Christ with not only thousands of laboring women but their extended families, as well.

The need for skilled midwives is so prevalent.
In the Philippines for example, only 60% of women give birth with the assistance of a
trained and qualified birth attendant. The maternal mortality rate in the Philippines is 200
deaths per 100,000 live births* compared to that of 20 deaths in developed nations. In
Southeast Asia a woman has a 1 in 140 chance of dying as a result of childbirth
complications compared to developed nations rating of 1 in 2,800. Under 5-years
old mortality rate and infant mortality rate is 33 per 1,000 in the Philippines.
A big part of their vision is to train and equip women to start their own birthing
centers in other third-world countries. This midwifery program will provide each volunteer
with the necessary skills and knowledge to practice anywhere in the world. Being a midwife
opens many doors to countless opportunities for ministry.
Sakem Silvey, a volunteer at Mercy wrote me of the incredible and unique mission capabilities that midwifes possess there. This is the paraphrased version--

The beauty of the "midwifery/missions" model is this:
While it often takes years to build trust and relationship in order for missionaries to present the Gospel to the people they are trying to reach - midwives have the amazing blessing of gaining trust and relationship with people in just a short time.
It does not take long for people to trust their midwife! And people tend to think more "eternally" when they are having a baby, so It makes it very natural to share God with them in real ways. The eternal return on our mission work begins immediately - what a blessing!
